We were commissioned by Gladedale to undertake a masterplan for the redevelopment of the area around Almondvale Stadium in Livingston. Our proposal was threefold: to create an identifiable Neighbourhood around the Stadium; to address the requirement for flatted housing adjacent to the town centre and to support and augment existing retail, commercial and leisure provision in the locality.
The ambition in the physical masterplanning and massing of the proposals is to employ best practice in Urban Design principles in order to create a ‘sense of place’. By the definition and enclosure of space between buildings, the proposals deliver a design solution that is specific to the site rather than the all too familiar application of a standard ‘product’.
We have avoided placing buildings within a ‘sea’ of parking by careful consideration of how the proposed built forms address each other. Through structured landscaping and the employment of Homezone philosophies to the residential element, we have sought to draw a balance between the need to accommodate traffic and the desire to create a readily accessible, pedestrian focused community.
In the residential areas the alternating sequence of soft and hard landscaped zones (Green zone / Homezone) form identifiable realms that orientate to and benefit from the visual amenity of the river valley. The Green zones allow the riverside Greenway to extend into the development permitting greater pedestrian permeability.
