Residential Panmure Street, Glasgow

Client:
Glenthistle Homes

Location:
Ruchill Park, Glasgow

Budget:
£4 million

Status:
Planning consent & building warrant granted

This project in the Firhill area of Glasgow is a sympathetic response to a challenging site.  Narrow in plan and sloping steeply down to Panmure Street, the elevated site borders Ruchill Park to the North, a wall of tenements to the West and offers panoramic views across the city to the South.

Our solution was to continue the form of the adjacent wall of Victorian tenements to repair and enhance the skyline as viewed from the city. The extended urban wall is broken to allow Ruchill Park to filter through and frame views of the City from the Park and vice-versa.

The steep rise of the site is dealt with by a plinth wall running along Panmure Street behind which are elevated south facing amenity spaces which enjoy the City panorama. The wall continuing the tenement block is stepped in both plan and height to the street to give greater texture and interest.

The three blocks are skewed on plan to join through the building lines on the adjacent sites Each block is ‘bookended’ in both plan and in height to give variation in roofline and frontage. There is a concentration of balconies and terraces off south facing living spaces.
