This new build housing development in West Loan, East Lothian, comprises
31 units of varying sizes with a mixture of houses and flatted apartments.
Due to the site’s historic context and its proximity to Preston
Tower, planning constraints required us to develop the design along a
traditional vernacular.
The masterplan uses both courtyard and pends, around
which buildings of differing storey heights, roof-scapes and elevational
treatments are arranged. By stepping back several of the buildings and
retaining the existing stone boundary wall what could have been a hard
street edge is softened.
The overall massing of the development is broken
up by varying the colour of external render and through a mixture of
slate and pantile roof finishes. This, together with the mixture of swept
and pitched dormers give the impression that the development is less
dense than it actually is.
The traditional aesthetic is further enhanced
through the use of skew gables and a restrained fenestration pattern
of sash and case windows.
